First of all, Install Moodle stand alone and verify it is working correct.

Go to the adminsection of Moodle (Stand alone mode), users

Set the authorisation module to DB and fill in the credentials from your Mambo database

Keep the password format to PLAIN.

Next :

Simply copy the contents of the Moodle directory into the root of your Moodle installation.

Next step is to install the moodle component as you are used to install other components.

Within the config of the component just list the url of your original  Moodle installation.

Registered Mambo users will automatically be added to Moodle.
